Bariatric Surgery Registry

Monitoring standards in New Zealand and Australia

The Bariatric Surgery Registry is a research project that monitors the standards of bariatric surgery performed at hospitals in Australia and New Zealand. It is a health initiative of the Australia and New Zealand Metabolic and obesity Surgery Society along with the University of Auckland and Monash University (Melbourne).

After your operation, you will receive a letter from the University of Auckland inviting you to take part in the Registry. This letter explains what is involved if you choose to participate. You can also choose NOT to be involved.

Participation is entirely voluntary. Be assured that your care will not be affected by your decision to participate. You should also be assured that you will not be individually identified in any report arising from the registry.

Your hospital or surgeon will provide the Registry with information about your weight, height, diabetes status and operation. Information on any complications arising from the surgery will be collected, and you may be contacted to check on your weight, diabetes status and about any issues arising from the surgery.

Information on the Registry database is stored securely at Monash University (Melbourne). All information is safeguarded by privacy laws and stored with the highest level of security – ISO 27001. Participants’ information will never be released to anyone beside your surgeon and hospital. No participants are identified in any reports or presentations.
